MES rk project 2021
“The role of surface conductive coatings of cathode materials of sodium-ion batteries in charge transfer processes” (IRN AP09563408)
Project goal:
To identify the mechanism of charge transfer during intercalation/deintercalation of sodium in cathode materials modified by applying electrically conductive surface coatings to particles of the starting material, and to determine the influence of the nature of electrically conductive additives on the characteristics of cathode composites of sodium-ion batteries.
Results achieved:
  1. A new cathode composite based on NaFe(SO4)2 and a conductive additive (MoS2) has been obtained and a method for its production has been developed.
  2. A mechanism for the intercalation process in cathode composites based on polyoxoanionic compounds and electron-conducting additives has been proposed.
  3. A single-particle mathematical model has been developed in COMSOL Multiphysics software to describe the process of charge transfer during intercalation in systems with an intermediate coating of the cathode material with an electrically conductive additive and direct contact of the carbon particle and the cathode material.
  4. Calculation methods revealed an extreme dependence of the intercalate concentration on the coating thickness, which confirms the charge transfer mechanism proposed above.
  5. A study was carried out of the behavior of the model under various process parameters: potentiostatic, galvanostatic, different current densities, different conductivity values of the intermediate phase.
