To launch a battery recycling system in Kazakhstan, it is necessary to create a collection infrastructure based on international experience. The key objective is to raise public awareness through a large-scale information campaign in the media, social media, and educational institutions to instill a culture of proper hazardous waste disposal and create a functioning collection infrastructure.

Battery recycling requires pre-sorting due to their diversity (lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, zinc-manganese dioxide, zinc, and others). This is necessary due to the differences in chemical composition, recycling requirements, and economic value of each type. Sorting improves the efficiency of valuable component recovery, reduces the risk of contamination and accidents, and optimizes recycling processes, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and economic benefits.

Batteries that are not mechanically damaged will be initially tested at their nominal voltage, and those with a voltage between 2.5 and 4 V will undergo electrochemical testing to identify functional batteries for reuse. Initial testing will be optimized, and threshold values ​​corresponding to 80% battery performance (SOC) will be determined.

A study of global practices, including mechanical, thermal, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods, to identify their advantages and disadvantages.

Development of methods for dismantling and shredding spent LIBs under controlled conditions (e.g. in an inert atmosphere or at low temperatures) to prevent the risk of fire and the release of hazardous gases.

Optimizing temperature regimes to decompose organic components and remove volatile compounds without generating toxic byproducts. This includes preventing the formation of HF and other toxic gases through pyrolysis process management. The addition of absorbents such as calcium or magnesium oxide and activated carbon based on local plant materials effectively binds and neutralizes harmful gases, including CO₂, NO₂, SO₂, and HF, during the pyrolysis process.

Development of leaching and selective precipitation methods for the recovery of high-purity lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese suitable for reuse in the production of new batteries.

Design and construction of a pilot plant for testing and optimizing developed technological processes.

Preparation of regulations, methodologies, and standards for industrial implementation of the technology, taking into account safety requirements and environmental legislation.
